When you think of someone as vulnerable, or you yourself is called vulnerable, then there is a good chance that you are going to see this as a negative thing. This makes sense, we are told all our lives that we need to be strong, to not show any weakness; for fear of us being taken advantage of.

Of course, this makes sense, but vulnerability can be positive too. How can showing your weaknesses be a good thing?

Vulnerability is a sign of strength

We see vulnerability as being weak; however, it is a sign of being resilient and strong. Strong enough to recognise your own weakness and to not be frightened to show other people it too. This takes a truly strong person to be able to do this and you should reward yourself for being someone who is strong.

“Vulnerability is not weakness. I define vulnerability as emotional risk, exposure, uncertainty. It fuels our daily lives.”

Vulnerability will help to push you forward

Growth is a key part to making yourself a better person. In order to grow, you need to be able to recognise the parts of you that may need to change and how you can do that. If you try to hide what makes you vulnerable; then you may not ever know what things you need to do to make yourself stronger and better. When living Heartful and accepting vulnerability as a part of your emotional health, you can grow mentality and emotionally.

Vulnerability allows you to create deeper relationships

As humans our main aim in life is to create deep and meaningful relationships with other people. This could be friendship or something romantic. It is hard to build relationships with people; you need to be open to making connections; however, this can mean that you show your own vulnerabilities and that you are aware of how you could be hurt by opening yourself up. It also shows those who you want to build a relationship with that you trust them, that you feel that your vulnerabilities are safe with them and that they won’t abuse them.

It shows you more about other people’s vulnerabilities

When you can recognise and understand what makes you vulnerable; then you can start to learn more about those around you. Being aware of other people’s vulnerabilities means that you can form better relationships with those who matter to you and also teach you to be a kinder person. Something that all of us should aim to be.

“To love someone fiercely, to believe in something with your whole heart, to celebrate a fleeting moment in time, to fully engage in a life that doesn’t come with guarantees—these are risks that involve vulnerability and often pain. But I’m learning that recognizing and leaning into the discomfort of vulnerability teaches us how to live with joy, gratitude, and grace.”

It is about time that being vulnerable stopped being seen as a negative thing; as something that we should be ashamed of. You need to embrace your own vulnerability and be able to recognise your weaknesses.

Not only will this help you to protect yourself, but also to work on how to make yourself a stronger person.

Being vulnerable will also teach you how to form better relationships with those who are closest to you. It will open you up to the chance of being hurt, which in turn shows that you trust people with your feelings.

What could be stronger than that?
